Delaware City is a quaint riverfront community proud of its rich history and excited about the future. Located on the Delaware River in New Castle County, Delaware, Delaware City is the gateway to many natural and historic treasures, such as the Delaware Estuary marshes, the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, Fort Delaware and Fort DuPont.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy the town’s restaurants and shops and to stroll through the Historic District, which has over 200 structures featuring architectural styles spanning the 19th and early 20th centuries. For the recreation minded, the Delaware City area is popular with bird watchers, bicyclists, kayakers, canoeists, and hikers.

Delaware City’s historic Town Hall was constructed in 1883 as the Delaware City School. It housed grades from 1-12 until the “new” Delaware City School was constructed at 5th & Bayard in 1930. The building was later used as a Parish hall and school by St. Paul’s Church. The City acquired the building for Town Hall in 1969. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Delaware City Historic District
Community Center:
The Delaware City Community Center is located in the former elementary school at 250 Fifth Street (5th & Bayard). The Center houses the Delaware City Library, the Senior Center, and the Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) Center. For information about programs for seniors, contact Town Hall at (302) 834-4573. Fort DuPont:
The Fort DuPont site was annexed into Delaware City in 2016. It will take approximately 10 years to complete all the houses, marina, theater district and farms to be developed at the site. For more information go to www.fortdupont.org
Library:
The Delaware City Library is located in the Community Center at 5th & Bayard. Hours: Mon.-Thurs. Noon to 8:00 PM; Fri.-Closed; Sat. 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM; Sun. Noon to 3:00 PM. Phone: (302) 834-4148.
Parks and Recreation:
Delaware City maintains several parks for active and passive recreation. These include Battery Park downtown, the Seventh Street Park and playground, the Community Center grounds, play area, and the Bubby Sadler ballfields on Route 9. In addition, the Delaware City Park District maintains a playground, ball field, and community building at Dragon Run Park. DART Bus Service:
DART service to Delaware City is provided through the existing Route 25 from 5:00 AM to 11:30 PM. The service will travel along DE 9 to Clinton Street to Canal Street ending at the parking area on Washington Street. On the return to Wilmington, service will include Washington Street to DE 9 to the Tybouts Corner Park & Ride, then resume Route 25’s current operating schedule.
Docks, Public:
Delaware City maintains floating docks for public use without a charge in season (May – October). There are no services available and no overnight docking is permitted. The privately owned Delaware City Marina (302) 834-4172 offers fuel and overnight docking facilities. The State of Delaware operates a public boat ramp across the Branch Canal from Delaware City. The launch is accessible through the Fort DuPont Site entrance on Route 9.
